Gould

American, 1804–1881

John Gould was an English ornithologist who published monographs on birds, illustrated by his wife, Elizabeth Gould, and other artists. He was considered the father of bird study in Australia due to his seven-volume series, The Birds of Australia, published in the 1840s. His identification of birds known as "Darwin's finches" contributed to the development of Charles Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection. Gould's work was referenced in Darwin's book, On the Origin of Species.
