He received a medal from the Society of Arts and exhibited three paintings at the Royal Academy between 1837 and 1841. Melville conducted the first official hydrographic survey of the north-east coast of Australia from 1842 to 1846 aboard the H.M.S Fly, under Captain Francis Price Blackwood, and illustrated several notable works, including Curiosities of Savage Life by James Greenwood and Joseph Beete Jukes’s official narrative of Fly’s voyage.
