Isaac Rosenberg

English, 1890–1918

Isaac Rosenberg was an English poet and painter, known for his poignant works that reflect the experiences of World War I. He was born on November 25, 1890, in Bristol, England, to Jewish immigrant parents from Lithuania. Rosenberg studied at the Slade School of Fine Art in London, where he developed his artistic skills and began to write poetry. His artistic career was cut short by his enlistment in the British Army during World War I, where he served as a private in the 12th Battalion of the Devonshire Regiment. He was killed in action on April 1, 1918, in France. Rosenberg's major works include the poetry collection 'Collected Works' and notable poems such as 'Break of Day in the Trenches' and 'Dead Man's Dump.' His style is characterized by vivid imagery and a deep exploration of the human condition amidst the horrors of war. Rosenberg is regarded as one of the significant war poets of his time, and his contributions to both literature and art continue to be studied and appreciated.
