Joachim von Sandrart (I)

German, 1606–1688

Joachim von Sandrart was a German painter, engraver, and art theorist, active during the 17th century. He is best known for his contributions to the Baroque style and for his role in the development of art theory in Germany. Sandrart was born in 1606 in Nuremberg and received his artistic training in Italy, where he studied under prominent artists such as Giovanni Battista Caracciolo and others. He returned to Germany in the 1630s and became a significant figure in the art scene, particularly in Nuremberg and later in Amsterdam. His major works include religious and mythological subjects, as well as portraits. Sandrart's writings, particularly his treatise 'Teutsche Academie,' published in 1675, are considered important contributions to the understanding of art theory and practice in his time. He died in 1688 in Amsterdam, leaving a legacy as both an artist and a theorist who influenced the Baroque movement in Germany and beyond.
