Johann Heinrich Tischbein the Elder

German, 1722–1789

Johann Heinrich Tischbein the Elder was a German painter born on February 15, 1722, in the town of Haina, in the Landgraviate of Hesse. He is known for his portraits and historical paintings, and he played a significant role in the development of German art in the 18th century. Tischbein studied under the guidance of his father, who was also a painter, and later trained in the studio of the prominent artist Johann Georg Wille in Paris. He returned to Germany, where he became a member of the Academy of Arts in Berlin. Tischbein's career flourished as he gained recognition for his ability to capture the likeness and character of his subjects. His major works include portraits of notable figures, such as the famous portrait of the poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. His style is characterized by a blend of realism and idealism, with a focus on the psychological depth of his subjects. Tischbein's contributions to portraiture and his influence on subsequent generations of artists solidify his significance in the history of German art.
