British, 1820–1914
Sir John Tenniel (1820–1914) was an English illustrator and political cartoonist. For about fifty years he drew cartoons for the satirical magazine Punch, and he illustrated Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1865) and Through the Looking-Glass (1871). His pictures, engraved on wood by the Dalziel brothers, still shape how readers imagine Alice. He was knighted in 1893.
