French, 1716–1809

Joseph-Marie Vien (1716–1809) was a French painter, born in Montpellier. A pupil of Charles-Joseph Natoire, he won the Prix de Rome in 1743 and was among the first French painters to take subjects from ancient art, as in The Cupid Seller (1763), based on an engraving of an ancient Roman wall painting. He directed the French Academy in Rome from 1775 to 1781 and taught Jacques-Louis David. He died in Paris in 1809.
