Kitao Masanobu

Japanese, 1761–1816

Kitao Masanobu was a Japanese ukiyo-e artist and printmaker, active during the Edo period. He is known for his contributions to the woodblock print genre and is considered one of the notable figures in the development of ukiyo-e. Kitao was born in 1761 in Edo, Japan, and trained under the prominent ukiyo-e artist Katsukawa Shunsho. He later became a master in his own right, producing a variety of works including portraits of kabuki actors, beautiful women, and landscapes. His style is characterized by its attention to detail and vibrant colors, which were typical of the ukiyo-e tradition. Kitao's works are significant for their influence on later artists and their role in popularizing the ukiyo-e genre both in Japan and abroad. He passed away in 1816.
