Kunishige

Japanese, 1777–1835

Kunishige, also known as Toyoshige, was a Japanese woodblock printer active during the Edo period from 1777 to 1835. He was the pupil, son-in-law, and adopted son of Toyokuni I, and he initially used the name Toyoshige until 1826, when he began signing his work as Toyokuni after receiving permission from his family. He passed away in 1835, and his legacy continued through Kunisada, who became known as Toyokuni III.
