Kuzma Petrov-Vodkin (1878–1939) was a Russian and Soviet painter and writer, born in Khvalynsk on the Volga and died in Leningrad. He trained in Saint Petersburg, at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture and in Munich, and combined the bright colours of Orthodox icons with his own “spherical perspective”. His best-known painting is Bathing of a Red Horse (1912), and in 1932 he became the first chairman of the Leningrad Union of Artists.
