Leon Kroll

American, 1884–1974

Leon Kroll was an American painter known for his contributions to the realist tradition in the early 20th century. He was born on March 24, 1884, in New York City and became prominent for his figurative works, particularly his nudes and portraits. Kroll studied at the National Academy of Design and later at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he was influenced by both traditional and modernist styles. His career spanned several decades, during which he exhibited widely and received numerous awards, including the prestigious Guggenheim Fellowship in 1932. Kroll's work is characterized by a focus on the human form, employing a rich palette and a strong sense of composition. He played a significant role in the American art scene, bridging the gap between academic realism and modernist tendencies, and his works are included in major museum collections across the United States.
