Luis de Góngora y Argote was a Spanish Baroque poet and playwright, considered one of the most important figures in Spanish literature. He was born on July 15, 1561, in Córdoba, Spain, and died on May 23, 1627, in Madrid. Góngora studied at the University of Salamanca, where he developed a deep interest in literature and poetry. His works are characterized by their complex syntax, rich imagery, and innovative use of language, which contributed to the development of the Spanish Baroque style. Major works include 'La Fábula de Polifemo y Galatea' and 'El Laurel de Apolo.' Góngora's influence on later poets and writers, including the Generation of '27, solidified his significance in the literary canon of Spain, and he is often regarded as a precursor to modernist poetry.
