British, 1700–1788
Mary Delany (1700–1788) was an English artist and letter writer. At the age of 72 she began making what she called paper mosaics: botanically exact collages of flowers cut from colored paper and laid on black backgrounds. By 1782 she had made nearly a thousand of them, and they are now in the British Museum.
