German, 1480–1528
Matthias Grünewald (c. 1480–1528) was a German painter of the Renaissance, born in Würzburg and died in Halle in 1528. Almost all of his surviving paintings are religious, and his best-known work is the Isenheim Altarpiece (1512–1516), painted for the monastery of the Antonite order at Isenheim and now in the Unterlinden Museum in Colmar.
