Italian, 1446–1523

Pietro Perugino was an Italian Renaissance painter, known for his serene compositions and masterful use of color and perspective. He is considered one of the leading artists of the Umbrian school and had a significant influence on the development of Renaissance art. Perugino was born in Città della Pieve, Italy, around 1446 and died in 1523. He trained under the painter Andrea del Verrocchio in Florence, where he developed his skills in painting and composition. Perugino's career flourished in the late 15th century, and he became the official painter for the Vatican, where he created some of his most notable works, including the 'Delivery of the Keys' in the Sistine Chapel. His style is characterized by a calm and harmonious quality, often featuring idealized figures and a balanced use of space. Perugino's influence extended to his students, including Raphael, and his contributions to the Renaissance art movement remain significant.
