Robert Havell

English, 1793–1878

Robert Havell was an English artist and engraver, known primarily for his detailed and vibrant wildlife prints. He was born in 1793 in London and became a prominent figure in the field of ornithological art. Havell trained under his father, Robert Havell Sr., who was also an engraver, and he later worked with notable artists such as John James Audubon. His collaboration with Audubon resulted in the publication of 'The Birds of America,' which is considered one of the most significant ornithological works ever produced. Havell's engravings are characterized by their precision and attention to detail, showcasing a wide variety of bird species in their natural habitats. He emigrated to the United States in 1832, where he continued to produce art and engravings until his death in 1878. Havell's contributions to wildlife art and his role in popularizing ornithological studies have solidified his significance in the history of American art.
