Robert Johnson

American, 1911–1938

Robert Johnson was an American blues singer, songwriter, and musician. He is considered one of the most influential figures in the history of blues music and is often cited as a precursor to rock music. Johnson was born on May 8, 1911, in Hazlehurst, Mississippi. Little is known about his early life, but he began playing guitar at a young age and was influenced by local musicians. He is believed to have been trained in the Delta blues style, which combines elements of African musical traditions with European folk music. Johnson's career was brief; he recorded only 29 songs in his lifetime, including classics such as 'Cross Road Blues' and 'Sweet Home Chicago.' His style is characterized by expressive vocals, intricate guitar work, and a deep emotional resonance. Johnson's music has had a lasting impact on numerous genres, and he is often regarded as a key figure in the development of modern music. He died on August 16, 1938, under mysterious circumstances, and his legacy continues to influence musicians today.
