Simone Martini

Italian, 1284–1344

Simone Martini was an Italian painter and a prominent figure in the Sienese school of painting during the 14th century. He is known for his elegant style and contributions to the development of Gothic art in Italy. Martini was born in Siena around 1284 and is believed to have trained under Duccio di Buoninsegna, a leading artist of the time. His work is characterized by its intricate detail, vibrant colors, and the use of gold leaf, which became a hallmark of his style. Martini's major works include the 'Annunciation' altarpiece in the Uffizi Gallery and the frescoes in the Palazzo Pubblico in Siena. He also worked on various commissions throughout Italy, including in Assisi and Avignon. Martini's significance lies in his ability to blend the Gothic tradition with emerging Renaissance ideals, influencing subsequent generations of artists. He died in 1344, leaving behind a legacy that would shape the course of Italian art.
