German, 1410–1451
Stefan Lochner (c. 1410–1451) was a German painter of the late International Gothic, based in Cologne. Probably born in Meersburg, he combined long flowing lines and brilliant colour with the realism and fine surface textures of early Netherlandish painting, in works such as the Madonna of the Rose Bower and the Last Judgment. He died in Cologne in 1451.
