Theophanes the Greek

Theophanes the Greek

Byzantine, 1340–1410

Theophanes the Greek was a Byzantine painter active in Russia during the 15th century. He is recognized as one of the most significant figures in the development of Russian icon painting. Theophanes was born in the Byzantine Empire, likely in the late 14th century, and moved to Russia around 1400. He is believed to have trained in Constantinople, where he was exposed to the rich traditions of Byzantine art. His work is characterized by a blend of Byzantine and local Russian styles, which helped shape the visual language of Orthodox iconography in Russia. Major works attributed to him include the icons for the Church of the Transfiguration in Novgorod and the frescoes in the Cathedral of the Annunciation in Moscow. Theophanes's influence extended beyond his lifetime, as he is considered a precursor to the later development of the Moscow school of icon painting, impacting artists such as Andrei Rublev.
