German-American, 1840–1902
Thomas Nast (1840–1902) was a German-born American cartoonist. Working for Harper's Weekly, he became one of the most influential political cartoonists of his time: his attacks on William "Boss" Tweed helped bring down the Tweed Ring in New York, and his drawings fixed the Republican elephant and popularized the Democratic donkey. His Christmas pictures, from Santa Claus in Camp (1863) to Merry Old Santa Claus (1881), shaped the American image of Santa Claus.
