Tessai trained in traditional Japanese painting techniques and was influenced by both Chinese and Japanese art forms throughout his career. He studied under the renowned artist Kōno Bairei and later became a prominent figure in the Nihonga movement, which sought to revive traditional Japanese painting methods in the face of Western influence. Tessai's work is characterized by its meticulous attention to detail, vibrant colors, and incorporation of calligraphy. Some of his major works include landscapes, floral compositions, and portraits, which reflect a deep appreciation for nature and the aesthetics of simplicity.
