Russian, 1865–1911
Valentin Alexandrovich Serov was a Russian painter, born on January 19, 1865, and died on December 5, 1911. He is regarded as one of the leading figures of Russian portrait painting in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Serov was born into a family of artists; his father was a notable composer, and his mother was a talented pianist. He studied at the Imperial Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg under the guidance of prominent artists such as Ilya Repin and Nikolai Ge.
