Maton, who was born in Leiden between 1643 and 1646, was registered as a pupil in Gerrit Dou’s studio in 1669. He became master of Leidengillet in 1671. He moved to Stockholm in 1681 but was back in Leiden the following year to sell his house.

Maton then returned to Stockholm where he later died. His style and motif circle were constantly based on Dous (Schneider 1920, p. 224).
