Poker Game — History & Facts
Dogs sit around a green card table under a hanging lamp, playing poker, with cards and chips between them and a bottle close at hand. Cassius Marcellus Coolidge painted it in 1894, the first in a series of 18 oil paintings of dogs at cards. Coolidge's first customers were cigar companies, which printed his pictures as giveaways. His fortunes rose when the printers Brown & Bigelow turned out hundreds of thousands of copies of his dog scenes as posters, calendars and prints. Long seen as kitschy barroom art, the painting sold at Sotheby's in New York in 2015 for $658,000.
Since September 2026 it has been on view at the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art in Los Angeles.
