Still Life with Game, Vegetables and Fruit — History & Facts
Game birds, apples and a lemon hang on strings inside a stone window frame, above a cardoon, carrots and radishes. Juan Sánchez Cotán painted the food, light and shadows with great realism: some objects lean on the frame, while the radishes and carrots jut out toward us, creating an illusion of depth. He signed and dated it 1602. The Prado credits him, above all, with establishing the still life, which it calls the most characteristically Spanish genre. The canvas, 68 × 88.2 cm, is in the Museo del Prado in Madrid.
