Belgian, 1884–1945
Alfred Ost (1884–1945) was a Belgian artist known for his work as a designer, watercolorist, illustrator, painter, draftsman, and political cartoonist. He began with realistic depictions of animals and genre scenes, later exploring religious themes in contemporary settings. His experiences during World War I in Amsterdam exposed him to avant-garde influences, and his art became darker and more pessimistic, partly due to his bipolar disorder. During World War II, he created charcoal murals at a Jesuit college in Antwerp in exchange for support, depicting religious subjects.
