French, 1834–1917
Edgar Degas (1834–1917) was a French artist associated with Impressionism, known for his pastel drawings, oil paintings, wax sculptures, prints, and drawings. He frequently depicted dancers, who appeared in over half his works, as well as racehorses, jockeys, and portraits marked by psychological depth and themes of isolation. Although considered a founder of Impressionism, Degas preferred to describe himself as a realist and worked mainly indoors. Born in Paris to a moderately wealthy family, he received rigorous academic training, initially aiming to be a history painter before focusing on scenes of modern life.
