George Romney

English, 1734–1802

George Romney (1734–1802) was an English painter who became the most fashionable portraitist of his era, depicting many prominent figures of society, including his muse Emma Hamilton. Born in Beckside, Dalton-in-Furness, he was the third of eleven children and showed early talent in drawing and woodworking. After informal art lessons and an apprenticeship with a local artist, he established himself as a painter in Kendal before moving to London in 1762, where he remained until 1799. Although he achieved great success, he never joined the Royal Academy of Arts and maintained financial support for his family, who stayed in Cumbria.
