Gerard Terborch was a Dutch painter and genre artist, active during the 17th century. He is renowned for his depictions of domestic interior scenes and is considered one of the leading Dutch genre painters of his time. Terborch was born in 1617 in Zwolle, Netherlands, into a family of artists. He trained under his father, who was a painter, and later studied in Amsterdam and possibly in Italy. He became a master in the Guild of Saint Luke in 1646. Terborch's work is characterized by its meticulous attention to detail, refined use of light, and an emphasis on the psychological depth of his subjects. His major works include "The Suitor's Visit," "The Glass of Lemonade," and "The Concert." Terborch's significance lies in his ability to convey intimate moments and the subtleties of human interaction, which influenced later generations of genre painters.
