Danish, 1885–1940
Gerda Marie Fredrikke Wegener (1885–1940) was a Danish illustrator and painter known for her fashion illustrations and later paintings that explored themes of gender and love. Her work, often in Art Nouveau and later Art Deco styles, depicted confident women and sometimes included erotic scenes inspired by her partner, Lili Elbe. Wegener also created comics and won sketching competitions in a Copenhagen newspaper. She exhibited in Denmark and later moved to Paris, where her art challenged traditional gender roles and was sometimes published as lesbian erotica.
