French, 1808–1879
Honoré Daumier (1808–1879) was a French painter, sculptor, and printmaker whose work commented on French social and political life from 1830 to 1870. He became known for his caricatures and cartoons in newspapers such as La Caricature and Le Charivari, satirizing the monarchy, clergy, politicians, judiciary, and various social classes. Daumier was associated with realism and produced thousands of lithographs, drawings, paintings, and sculptures. Despite financial struggles and limited recognition for his paintings during his lifetime, his work influenced later artists.
