American, 1831–1913
John George Brown (1831–1913) was a British citizen who became an American painter specializing in genre scenes. Born in Durham, England, he trained as a glass worker before studying art in Newcastle-on-Tyne and Edinburgh. After moving to New York City in 1853, he pursued painting full-time, focusing on idealized images of New York street children such as bootblacks and newsboys. Brown's detailed works, often reproduced as lithographs, were popular with the public and wealthy collectors, and he served as president of the Water-Color Society from 1887 to 1904.
