American, 1844–1926
Mary Cassatt (1844–1926) was an American painter and printmaker born in Allegheny, Pennsylvania, now part of Pittsburgh. She spent most of her adult life in France, where she became friends with Edgar Degas and exhibited with the Impressionists. Cassatt focused on scenes depicting women’s social and private lives, especially the relationships between mothers and children. She also helped American collectors discover Impressionism through her connections, including her friendship with the Havemeyer family.
