French, 1840–1916
Odilon Redon (1840–1916) was a French artist known for his work as a draughtsman, printmaker, and painter associated with Symbolism. Early in his career, he focused on charcoal and lithography, creating works he called his noirs, and gained wider attention after his drawings were mentioned in a novel in 1884. In the 1890s, Redon shifted to working in pastel and oil, abandoning his earlier noirs after 1900. His later paintings, influenced by Japanese art and inspired by Hindu and Buddhist culture, became more dreamlike and abstract, and his work is seen as a precursor to Surrealism.
