American, 1783–1872
Thomas Sully (1783–1872) was an English-American portrait painter who became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 1809 and spent most of his life in Philadelphia. He studied painting in England under Benjamin West and was influenced by Thomas Lawrence, earning the nickname "Sir Thomas Lawrence of America." Over a 70-year career, Sully created more than 2,300 works, including portraits of U.S. presidents, General Marquis de Lafayette, and Queen Victoria, as well as landscapes and historical scenes. His art was also adapted for United States coinage.
