Painting — History & Facts
STILL LIFE. Goal Time Piece. Willem Claesz Heda (1593/94-1680/82) lived and died in Haarlem, who was the centre of the Dutch landscape and still life painting of the 16th century.
Compositions with erected vessels and glass with food or food residues were called at this time for breakfast or banquet motifs. The Dutch term stilleven, meaning immobile life, became more common only in the late 16th century. Heda’s two still lifes in the Hallwylska Museum date from the 1640s and they also show the artist’s ability to reproduce different materials, mirror effects and reflections.
Heda was also called the Light and the Master of Reflection.
