Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso

Portuguese, 1887–1918

Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso was a Portuguese painter and a key figure in the modernist movement in Portugal. He is recognized for his innovative use of color and form, which bridged the gap between traditional Portuguese art and European avant-garde movements. Souza-Cardoso was born on November 14, 1887, in Manhente, Portugal. He studied at the School of Fine Arts in Lisbon and later moved to Paris, where he was influenced by the works of artists such as Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso. His career, though cut short by his early death, included significant contributions to the development of modern art in Portugal. Major works include 'The Dance' and 'The Portrait of a Young Girl.' Souza-Cardoso's style is characterized by a blend of expressionism and cubism, and he is considered one of the most important Portuguese artists of the early 20th century. He died on December 25, 1910, in Paris, France, at the age of 23.
