Italian, 1240–1302
Cimabue (Cenni di Pepo, c. 1240–1302) was a Florentine painter and designer of mosaics, who died in Pisa. Although rooted in Byzantine models, works such as the Santa Trinita Maestà and the Santa Croce Crucifix give his figures more lifelike proportions and shading, and he is regarded as one of the first great Italian painters to break from the Italo-Byzantine style. Giorgio Vasari called him the teacher of Giotto.
