Jules Chéret

French, 1836–1932

Jules Chéret (1836–1932) was a French painter and lithographer recognized as a leading figure in Belle Époque poster art and called the father of the modern poster. Born in Paris to a family of artisans, he apprenticed with a lithographer at thirteen and later studied at the École Nationale de Dessin. After training in London, he returned to France and produced colorful posters for entertainment venues, businesses, and products, helping to pioneer illustrated advertising posters. His lively images of women, known as 'Cherettes,' contributed to changing attitudes about women’s roles and public behavior.
