Dutch, 1912–1996
Maarten Oortwijn (1912–1996) was a Dutch draughtsman, photographer, and illustrator from Purmerend. He began his career in advertising, producing commissioned drawings and illustrations, and later focused on landscapes and cityscapes, especially of Noord-Holland and the Waterland region. His detailed works, often described as "photography with a pen," depicted topography, architecture, crafts, and interiors. Oortwijn's illustrations appeared in regional newspapers and magazines, and in 1993, the province of Noord-Holland acquired over six hundred of his drawings for its archive.
