Richard Nicolaüs Roland Holst

Dutch, 1868–1938

Richard Nicolaüs Roland Holst (1868–1938) was a Dutch artist who worked as a painter, draftsman, lithographer, etcher, book cover designer, and writer. He created many works in a modified Symbolist style and was active in producing woodcuts, posters, murals, stained glass, and book illustrations. Holst taught at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten, later becoming its Director, and promoted collaboration among artists. Influenced by William Morris, he saw art as a service to society and was involved in socialist circles alongside his wife, Henriette van der Schalk.
