Persian, 1555
Sultan Muhammad was a Persian painter at the Safavid court in Tabriz under Shah Ismail I and Shah Tahmasp I. He directed Shah Ismail's painting workshop, was the first director of the Shahnama of Shah Tahmasp and taught painting to Tahmasp when he was crown prince. Only two paintings bear his signature, among them the Allegory of Worldly and Otherworldly Drunkenness in the Cartier Hafiz (about 1531–33), and his contemporary Dust Muhammad credits him with The Court of Gayumars. He died before 1555.
