Suzanne Valadon

French, 1865–1938

Suzanne Valadon was a French painter and the first woman to be admitted to the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts. She is recognized for her bold, expressive style and her focus on the female form, often depicting women in candid and intimate settings. Valadon was born on September 23, 1865, in Bessines-sur-Gartempe, France. She began her career as a model for prominent artists such as Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Henri Toulouse-Lautrec, which provided her with exposure to the art world and influenced her later work. Valadon became a self-taught artist and gained recognition for her unique perspective and ability to capture the complexities of femininity. Her notable works include 'The Blue Room' and 'The Bathers.' Valadon's contributions to art paved the way for future generations of female artists, and she remains a significant figure in the post-impressionist movement.
