Tsukioka Yoshitoshi

Japanese, 1839–1892

Tsukioka Yoshitoshi (1839–1892) was a Japanese printmaker recognized as the last major master and an innovator of the ukiyo-e woodblock printing and painting tradition. Born in Edo, he began art lessons as a child and was apprenticed to Kuniyoshi at age 11, receiving the artist name "Yoshitoshi." His career bridged the late Edo period and the early years of modern Japan, during which he became concerned about the decline of traditional Japanese culture and woodblock printing. Despite the rise of Western reproduction methods, he continued to develop the traditional print, producing his first work in 1853.
