William Bouguereau

1825–1905

William-Adolphe Bouguereau (1825–1905) was a French academic painter known for realistic genre scenes and modern interpretations of mythological subjects, often focusing on the female form. He achieved significant popularity in France and the United States during his lifetime, receiving many official honors and high prices for his work, but was criticized by the Impressionist avant-garde. Bouguereau produced 822 known paintings, though the locations of many are now unknown. His reputation declined in the early twentieth century but saw renewed interest in the 1980s with a revival of figure painting.
