Aufbewahrungssaal während des Museumsumbaus Adolf Friedrich Erdmann von Menzel (Alte Nationalgalerie, Berlin) — History & Facts
A forest of ancient gods and heroes stands silent, crowded together in uneasy fellowship. The eye is drawn first to the tumultuous knot of figures at the center—a muscular giant grappling with a limp, twisting form—while all around, marble bodies loom and recede in the half-light, caught mid-stride, mid-gesture, mid-thought. The unfinished quality at the edges, where lions and figures dissolve into sketch, signals a world in transition: here, the old order is not destroyed but merely displaced, awaiting its return to glory.
The red columns and deep shadows carve the space into a grand but provisional hall, a backstage for legends waiting to be reinstalled. This is a world between eras, painted in 1848 by Adolph von Menzel, at a time when museums themselves were being reinvented. The mid-nineteenth century saw a new reverence for the classical past, but also a willingness to rearrange and reinterpret it—collections were moved, catalogued, and sometimes hidden away during renovations, as in this scene. Such works were rarely made for grand display; they served as records, studies, or meditations on the fate of art and memory.
Now in the collection of The Yorck Project, this image invites us to linger among the statues, to sense the weight of history not as a distant echo, but as a presence just out of reach, waiting for the light to return.
