This bull was part of a group of bronze animals that Heinrich Julius, Duke of Braunschweig-Lüneburg (1564–1613), bought for his castle garden. The animals were later incorporated into a fountain; this bull, along with five others, supported a circular basin. The fountain was dismantled, but sixteen animals have been preserved.

The bull is modelled on a bronze statue by Giambologna.
