Christmas Tree with Candles — History & Facts
Painted in oil on cardboard before 1919, Christmas Tree with Candles by Rudolf Bernhard Willmann presents a close-up view of a festively decorated Christmas tree. The composition centers on the lower branches, which are adorned with lit candles, glass baubles, and various ornaments including a white bird and a blue bell-shaped decoration. The artist uses quick, textured brushstrokes to convey the density of the pine needles and the reflective surfaces of the ornaments.
Warm candlelight is depicted with touches of yellow and orange, contrasting with the deep green of the tree and the bright colors of the decorations. This work reflects a tradition of holiday imagery common in Central Europe in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, where decorated Christmas trees with real candles were a central motif of domestic celebration. The painting measures 48 by 32 cm and is signed by the artist on the lower left. It is currently documented in the Dorotheum collection, with its date established as before 1919.
