Joan of Arc — History & Facts

Joan of Arc by Roger de La Fresnaye, painted in 1912, shows the French heroine as a tall standing figure in white armor, holding a banner inscribed with the words Jesus Maria and a shield marked with the fleur-de-lis. Her body and the space around her are built from broad, faceted planes of gray, blue and white, the painter's response to Cubism, while the figure itself stays clear and monumental. La Fresnaye (1885–1925) worked in Paris among the Cubist painters of the Section d'Or and joined the new geometry to the French tradition of clear drawing and national subjects; his Artillery of 1911 is another example. Joan of Arc is a large canvas, 200 × 100 cm, and belongs to the Musée d'Art Moderne in Troyes.
